about

Open Wide has evolved over the past few years, and it’s become a coming out song. It’s about realizing that boxes and labels can’t always provide relief or easy answers. It’s about bisexuality, queerness, and gender confusion, but it’s also about realizing who I am in other ways. I’ve always been able to easily see all sides of most situations even when I disagree, and find myself pulled between logic and instinct, head and heart. This song asks, when is it just my nature to give second chances or stay in indecision, or when has it crossed a line into a situation that doesn’t serve me? When do I let one part of me lead, or the other?

Beyond this song specifically, I also believe it’s so important to recognize and accept ourselves as full human beings in all of our multi-facets and nuances. Breaking out of black-and-white dualistic thinking can be so freeing. In a world that so often finds security in simplifying and categorizing, it is hard to be someone who doesn’t “fit.” (And almost everyone has at least one way they don’t “fit.”) It’s an act of rebellion to learn to love ourselves for who we are, honor our messiness and indecision, and above all choose our higher selves even/especially when we are faced with resistance. --MB

lyrics

Been trying to find some way now to say it
I’ve given up on working to make this feel right
‘Cause so many words fell into their places
And I cannot hide
I cannot hide

So tell me this is right
What constitutes disaster?
We’re loosening the line
And promising thereafter
If you say it’s fine, could be overnight
I'm absolving everything
I know it all just falls in time
But you know
I’m not built for choosing sides

Door open wide right in front of me
And I can’t close my eyes
I can’t decide how it oughta be
With no end in sight
With no end in sight

If everything happens for a reason
I don’t wanna move for fear of blocking its light
I sense in your fingertips that you’re fleeing this feeling
But I cannot fight
I cannot fight this

Door open wide right in front of me
And I stop keeping time
I can’t describe how it’s haunting me
With you on my mind
